I have serious navigation issues! I have my AOW and I feel I should be a lot better than I am at finding my way around. If anyone fancies taking a plunge and practising this art, I would be so so grateful :)

One thing to remember is that a lot of navigation is down to observation. Swimming a bearing is only one, tiny part of finding your way, the big part is noting features of what you are travelling over and what is in front of you.

For example on a wreck, there are certain parts (e.g. the props at the back!) which can orientate you and tell you where you are and which way to go to get to other parts of the wreck.

So with this in mind, try researching the environment that you are frequently divining and try to identify key feature and the way they line up. Also note features and formation at your favourite dive site so that if you come across a particular bit of wreckage, for example, you have an idea where other parts of the site are in relation to it.

Hi!

Thanks Andy, that would be great fun, Vobster would probably be best if thats good by you! Im not available this weekend but the 2nd or 3rd of July is absolutely fine?

Thanks for tips Duck, Im gonna take that on board, I managed it better abroad, but everything was a lot clearer, it was easier to recognise things and I wasn't relying on a compass and kicks or anything at all. I will hopefully by the end of the day be able to get from one part of Vobster to the next and know exactly what Im doing!!! :)

Vobster is quite good for practising navigation (that and it's one of best inland sites) as you can work on compass bearings (especially swimming mid water from one side to the other) or use features - not only the "attractions" but the ridges, dips and sunken trees.

Not Saturday I'm diving down in Weymouth.

I'll be at the night dive on Thursday evening though.
